Oulu University Hospital, University of Oulu, NordLab and the health care districts of Lapland, Länsi-Pohja, Central Ostrobothnia and Kainuu have established the Northern Finland Biobank Borealis. As the population of Northern Finland is uniquely homogenous, the biobank sample collections are especially interesting for research. Furthermore, the Oulu region is a particularly good environment for collaboration between life sciences and ICT specialists.
Biobank Borealis offers the research community, both academic and industrial, 1) access to professionally maintained sample collections linked to clinical health information and accumulating research data, 2) sample storage and management infrastructures, 3) collaboration in consent, data and sample collection as well as development of analysis and data mining tools, 4) digital pathology, whole slide imaging and tissue microarray services.
