MSD Finland Oy and Noona Healthcare initiate Nordic cooperation to develop the follow-up of cancer patients
The cooperation will open new doors for Noona Healthcare in MSD's international client network and promote its faster move to global markets. The companies’ joint aim is to enhance cancer patients' follow-up during treatment and through that lower the costs of cancer treatment. MSD is one of the world’s leading healthcare companies, and Noona Healthcare is among Finland’s most celebrated start-ups in its sector. The two companies announced their cooperation on Monday 13 June 2016.
The number of new cancer cases is on a rapid increase – cancer is the most common cause of death in the developed countries. In Finland, the annual cost of cancer treatment has risen to more than a billion euros. Managing cancer and its symptoms more efficiently offers a wealth of potential for improving the quality of treatment and making cost savings. This could be enabled through more systematic telemonitoring of cancer patients’ health in-between appointments, and for that, Noona Healthcare has developed a mobile service, Noona, in cooperation with the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS) Oncology Department. Noona allows patients, hospitals and cancer clinics to recognize patients' severe symptoms at an earlier stage than before and offer them more personal support during and after a course of treatment.
“MSD wants to be part of finding solutions to healthcare's major challenges. We have developed new, individual medical treatments to combat cancer. Thanks to them, care is faster, better targeted and more effective. However, the challenges of cancer treatment are often varied and solving them means bringing together a variety of skills. Partnerships allow us to produce more value to both patients and the society as a whole. The cooperation with Noona Healthcare enables us to offer more personal support to our patients during the course of treatment, which is well in line with our strategy,” says Managing Director Ilpo Tolonen from MSD Finland.
Doors open to the world
“We want to be part of the story that makes Noona global. Finland has high-quality cancer treatment knowledge that is now digitally exported to the rest of the world. We have seen that the first steps of becoming global are often the most challenging ones for start-ups. We offer our network to Noona Healthcare and open doors to them to European cancer clinics. The first part of our cooperation will be launched in the Nordic Countries. Noona brings benefits to doctors, nurses, patients as well as pharmaceutical companies,” Tolonen continues.
Monitoring cancer patients’ health using mobile technology has stirred a fair amount of interest across the globe as increasingly convincing evidence of its benefits has been published.
“For us, a small Finnish start-up, the support of a major global partner may play a substantial role. The cooperation will significantly speed up Noona’s export efforts, which is of primary importance to us. The biggest challenge at the start has been to organize meetings with the management of leading cancer clinics and hospitals who make the decision to take up Noona,” CEO Jani Ahonala from Noona tells.
