Helsinki Institute of Life Science HiLIFE is a new life science research center at the University of Helsinki. HiLIFE enhances high quality research and development, and integrates life science strengths across University of Helsinki campuses. HiLIFE forms an attractive international environment for researchers, and facilitates national and international partnerships in areas of research, infrastructures, and innovations.

HiLIFE activities will initiate with a call for HiLIFE Tenure Track positions during summer 2016. The HiLIFE Infrastructure program will ensure efficient network of cutting-edge research infrastructures with funding initiating in 2017. HiLIFE is also piloting new ways to enhance technology transfer activities in collaboration with national and international partners, and within the Health Capital Helsinki initiative.

With these programs HiLIFE will involve all life science faculties: Agriculture and Forestry, Biological and Environmental Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Veterinary Medicine. Also the life science research institutes will join in: Institute of Biotechnology, Institute of Molecular Medicine Finland, and Neuroscience Center. Also some large infrastructures are included from the start.

HiLIFE establishment is supervised by Founding Director Tomi Mäkelä and a Steering Group chaired by Vice Rector Keijo Hämäläinen. “I'm very excited about the opportunity to lead the first steps of HiLIFE” Mäkelä notes. “We can start new recruitments as soon as decisions on name, mission and organization are made by the Board. Organizing infrastructures, and technology transfer are already ongoing. HiLIFE aims to link top science and education across campuses and is truly a joint effort. It’s great everyone is on board in this effort to create attractive conditions for top young researchers.”
