UNIVERSITY OF EASTERN FINLAND
The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest universities in Finland. We operate on three campuses in Joensuu, Kuopio and Savonlinna, and are home to approximately 15,000 students and 2,800 members of staff. We have thirteen fields of study, making our academic offering the most multidisciplinary in Finland.
We are brave at crossing academic boundaries and our interdisciplinary approach is internationally recognized. In fields such as clinical medicine, pharmacy, pharmacology, biosciences and nursing science, we are at the global cutting edge of research, and several international rankings place us among the world’s leading universities.
Our activities underscore multidisciplinarity. Our key interdisciplinary research areas are built around four global challenges. These challenges are Ageing, lifestyles and health; Learning in a digitized society; Cultural encounters, mobilities and borders; and Environmental change and sufficiency of natural resources.

Research centers, services and infrastructures
The Clinical Research Centre - CRC focuses its clinical research on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of nationally important chronic diseases, e.g. neurological diseases, diabetes, vascular diseases, obesity and diseases of bone and cartilage. It works in close collaboration with the Kuopio University Hospital. The Centre has excellent facilities and 25-year experience to study mechanisms of action of drugs in various models, to study genetics of complex diseases and to conduct clinical trials in phases I - IV.
The Kuopio Research Centre of Geriatric Care is an academic research organization for geriatric pharmacotherapy, age-related diseases, nutrition and geriatric rehabilitation. The Centre works with a network of local, national and international partners for better understanding and optimizing health care for older people.
The Kuopio Welfare Research Center KWRC is a multidisciplinary research and development center focusing on research of wellbeing and welfare systems.
Significant research infrastructures at the UEF include the Biomedical Imaging Unit (BIU), the Biobank of Eastern Finland, the National Virus Vector Laboratory, the Lab Animal Centre and the GMB Omics Centre.
